  Each iterator is itself an iterable object, though only once. This helper function is there so that iterators can be used ergonomically in for loops (which de-sugar to a call to .iter())

  The merge is stable, meaning that the order of equal elements is preserved, with the elements from self coming before the elements from other (and vice-versa if the iterator is reversed/used with next_back).
